Usually when I start a piece representation is not my goal. Rather I simply seek to transform the irregular rock before me into an appealing form. Sometimes I want to show off the stone’s weathered surfaces and internal patterning. Occasionally I just aim to create an intriguing geometric shape. As I near completion, I frequently realize that my sculpture is reminding me of something real or imagined. Friends and relatives who see a finished piece often report having such an evocative experience. Before looking at a titled enlargement in this gallery, ask yourself whether the piece brings anything to your mind. (There’s never a right answer!)
