My first stone-carving class in Seattle was with the superb figurative sculptor, Sabah Al-Dhaher. I was fortunate that he went beyond teaching me the basic techniques for shaping hard stones that I was eager to learn. He also introduced me to the joy and challenge of doing figurative work by having me transform an egg-shaped cobble into a stylized likeness of a human head. From time to time since then, as the pieces imaged in this gallery indicate, I’ve taken on the challenge of representing organic forms. At present, I’m carving a scarab out of basinite. (Note: All dimensions in this and the other galleries include the bases.)
